KABULAKAN FESTIVAL
May in Dumaguete City is the time when Mother Nature rolls up her
sleeves and gets to work. Flowers bloom in profusion and in a great
collage of color. Trees are lush and green. And although fruits know
no season in the city, they are especially abundant in May.
While it is a tourism event, the Kabulakan Festival also fosters
awareness of our environment and expresses our gratitude for the
blessings that are unfailingly bestowed upon our city, especially in
May, the time of plentiful harvests and abundance of flowers.
The
Kabulakan Festival is also meant to draw visitors to Dumaguete at this
time of the year. It is anticipated that through the festival, the city
will truly be known as the City of Gentle People. It is also designed
to further strengthen long-lasting cooperation and camaraderie among the
barangays, as they are provided with the happy opportunity to dance
together in the spirit of oneness and community.
What happens during the Kabulakan Festival?
To officially open the festival, and to gather momentum and excitement,
bands of national stature are going to rock the nights away at the
famous Rizal Boulevard while the popular Kumbira sa Quezon Park or food
festival is also held at the Quezon Park with local bands entertaining
every night. This food festival is realized through the cooperation of
some of the leading restaurants in the city as they put up food booths
in the park. There are also other activities which are lined-up for
this week-long event happening every day to get the whole community feel
the grandeur of the event.
The concept of the Kabulakan Festival streetdancing and showdown is for
the participating barangays to choose a flower that are abundant in the
city and interpret the legend or meaning of that flower through dance in
most colorful costumes and adornments.

The Kabulakan Festival is about flowers. And more.
The Kabulakan Festival
does not aim to boast that Dumaguete City is a city of flowers. It is not.
The festival is not designated to duplicate the Panagbenga Festival of
Baguio nor the Kadayawan of Davao, because it cannot.
Rather, the festival
aims to set the ball rolling to make Dumaguete a green and garden city. It
aims to inspire people to plant flowers, trees, and even vegetables and
fruit that will somehow help augment food sustainability for the city.
It sends the message
that even in the city, in a fast bourgeoning city like Dumaguete, the beauty
of flowers and the lush greenery of trees are not impossible. The Kabulakan
Festival pays tribute to Mother Nature and for her kindness and blessings
bestowed on Dumaguete City.
It is therefore, not a
coincidence that the Kabulakan Festival is held in May, the Month of
Flowers.
Perhaps, someday soon,
the Kabulakan Festival of Dumaguete will at last earn its niche as the
flower festival destination in this side of the country.
